Start here: about Kara | about Knit Vlog

Welcome! I'm Kara and I am the one woman show behind Knit Vlog.

What is Knit Vlog?
Knit Vlog is a website and a YouTube series documenting the stories of my knitting projects and creative endeavors. It is also a little sneak peek into my daily life, as the way I live affects the way I craft.

I watch knitting youtube channels. I also watch some daily vloggers. This is my experiment in combining the two - my life and my craft. A vlog but mainly framed about my knitting life, spilling over on occasion into the rest of my world.

I love the magic of pointy stick and string! I love color and texture and creating something from nothing!

I want to share the who, what, when, double wear/where, why, and how of my knitting. I want to share this aspect of my life that makes me feel alive and happy.

Thus, Knit Vlog was born. The first Knit Vlogs appeared in 2016 (more on that in a moment).

... ... ...

You can find the vlogs here: Kara Fleck on YouTube   (new vlogs coming soon)

Here on the Knit Vlog website you'll find project pages, a handful of tutorials and the method to my madness, as well as links to the Knit Vlog videos.

April 2019 update and relaunch plans: After five years as a caregiver, my life has changed. While I would do it all over again in a heartbeat if needed, it was the most difficult thing I've ever done. Caregiving was a defining chapter of my life and profoundly changed me and my family.

So now I find myself wanting to reclaim and refocus some of my time and energy. Most of that I am giving to my kids. Some of that time and energy I am giving back to myself.

A handful of years ago, I made vlogs about my knitting and various other topics. When life got to be too much, Knit Vlog was one of the things I let go of, but I've always missed it.

I want to bring that back, and I believe now is a good point in time for me to revisit this crafty little project that brought me so much joy. So, I'll be relaunching Knit Vlog in May of 2019 and making the old new again. Stay tuned!

So, now that you know a bit about Knit Vlog, perhaps you'd like to know a bit more about me. If you want the super quick run down on Kara Fleck, here you go:

Sagittarius. INFP. Slytherin. 4w5. Not what you're expecting.

Married 18 years. Mom of four. Homeschooler. Knitter. Bookworm. Huge nerd. Over forty and damn proud of herself for making it this far.

I am ... a lover of lists, knitter of socks, reader of mysteries. Frequenter of Instagram. Horribly behind on email. (But you can get in touch with me at KaraFleck AT if you've got some patience) Currently in a letting go & waiting season of life.

Things you should know about the blog:
  • I don't have a niche. Wait. Could forty-five year old woman hopped up on too much coffee and in possession of a laptop, an iphone camera, and knitting needles be a niche?
  • This is one of my favorite posts on the blog.
  • This post about how I knit my socks on small circs  is popular with readers.
  • After trying to be a "good" content creator for years, I threw out the editorial calendar. Now I just share when I feel like I have something worthwhile to share.
  • However, I am committed to being consistent with KnitVlog and I want to be reliably regular about sharing both here and on YouTube. I just want to do so without penning myself in or making less then my best effort.
  • I don't have a newsletter. Bookmark this site, subscribe via email, or keep an eye on my Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram where I try to give a shout out when I have a new post, vlog, or project.

Things you should know about me:
  • I pick my battles.
  • One of the things I fight for is time in my day to create.
  • As an introverted person, I want to quit sharing online at least once a week. Most of you are really cool. Some of you are assholes.
  • This is just real, unedited me. I used to censor myself, but that takes a lot of energy and frankly feels dishonest. Look, I clean up pretty well when I go out in public or take a paying writing gig but this blog is my virtual living room. What you see here is what you get.

There are a thousand reasons why my life should be complicated, and sometimes it is, but I strive to keep things simple and to focus on the essentials.

I do my best to focus on what matters to me, even if what matters to me is sometimes a bit unconventional.

I've been madly in love with the same man for over two decades. He is home to me. I know it's cliche to say, but he really is my best friend. We have been through some serious shit together. I'm glad we always manage to make it through a little stronger, a little smarter, and a lot more in love. My faith in many things has been shaken over the years, but I believe in us.

Christopher and I live in a small town in central Indiana. We have four children, ranging in age from seven to seventeen. We homeschool our kids. (I write about this as a contributor to the blog Simple Homeschool).

I find myself here, in what is hopefully mid-life, sandwiched between my responsibilities and my creative ambitions.

If creativity is a survival skill, then knitting is both my shelter and my fire. Knit Vlog gives me a way to tell those the stories of my projects in a way that feeds my soul. Whether it is cobbling together iphone videos or sitting down to write about what knitting means to me, I value these online spaces.

It is a simple thing, yarn and some free time, but I cherish it.

Thanks for joining me!

Best wishes,
